MSEA EQUIPS MSE GROUPS IN HOMA BAY WITH MACHINES TO BOOST PRODUCTIVITY AND ENTERPRISE GROWTH

Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) in Homa Bay County have received a boost to their operations following the distribution of machinery and equipment to 25 MSE groups by the Micro and Small Enterprises Authority (MSEA), in partnership with Homa Bay County Woman Representative, Hon. Dr. Joyce Atieno Bensuda.

The equipment was handed over during the MSE Empowerment Forum hosted by Hon. Bensuda, bringing together entrepreneurs, national and county government representatives, and development partners to advance enterprise development, strengthen local businesses and expand economic opportunities in the county.

Speaking during the forum, the Cabinet Secretary for Co-operatives and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Development, Hon. FCPA Dr. Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya, EGH, reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for small businesses through improved access to affordable financing, modern equipment, business development services and markets.

He emphasised the contribution of micro and small enterprises to employment creation, household incomes and local economic development, noting that equipping entrepreneurs with appropriate tools and technologies is critical to improving productivity, strengthening competitiveness and supporting sustainable enterprise growth.

The beneficiary groups received machinery and equipment tailored to their respective trades, including sewing machines, welding machines, car wash equipment, posho mills, woodworking machines, barbering equipment, mechanical tool kits, ice-pop-making machines, a lathe machine, and wrench and jack sets.

The equipment is expected to enhance the groups’ production capacity, improve the quality and efficiency of their services, and enable them to take on more business opportunities.

For entrepreneurs engaged in manufacturing, value addition and service provision, access to appropriate machinery can help reduce operational constraints, increase output and strengthen their ability to compete in local markets. The intervention also presents opportunities for business expansion, income generation and employment creation, particularly among young people and women.

Beyond the equipment, the forum provided a platform for Homa Bay entrepreneurs to showcase locally manufactured and value-added products, including beauty products, honey, peanut butter and other goods produced by MSEs in the county.

The exhibition highlighted the diversity of enterprises operating in Homa Bay and the potential for local businesses to contribute to value addition, innovation and economic growth.

Market access remains a critical component of MSEA’s enterprise development interventions. Through trade fairs, exhibitions and other market-linkage initiatives, the Authority has facilitated more than 100 participations by MSEs from Homa Bay County, providing opportunities for entrepreneurs to showcase their products, engage potential buyers, build business networks and explore new markets.

These initiatives complement machinery and equipment support by helping enterprises translate increased production capacity into business opportunities and potential sales growth.

The forum also served as an opportunity to sensitise entrepreneurs on available Government programmes designed to strengthen MSME growth and competitiveness.

Mr. Edward Munoru, Project Coordinator for the Kenya Jobs and Economic Transformation Project (KJET), highlighted opportunities under the project and encouraged eligible enterprises to organise themselves into groups and take advantage of the ongoing application window.

KJET seeks to strengthen MSME clusters by addressing constraints to productivity, competitiveness and market access, while supporting enterprise development and job creation.

The sensitisation provided entrepreneurs with information on additional avenues for business growth, complementing MSEA’s interventions in equipment provision, capacity building and market linkages.

The MSE Empowerment Forum demonstrated the importance of partnerships in addressing the practical challenges facing small businesses. By bringing together Government institutions, elected leaders, development partners and entrepreneurs, the initiative connected enterprises with productive assets, market opportunities and information on available support programmes.
