Kisumu County hosted the 4th edition of the Kenya Public–Private Sector MSMEs Dialogue (MSMEs Connect), bringing together government leaders, private sector stakeholders, development partners, and over 100 MSMEs for a vibrant and impactful forum aimed at strengthening Kenya’s enterprise landscape. Held under the theme “Building a Sustainable MSMEs Ecosystem for Inclusive Growth,” the event showcased the innovation and resilience of local entrepreneurs, with exhibitors displaying an impressive array of products and services that highlighted the sector’s dynamism and potential for expansion.
During the event, Kisumu Governor H.E. Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o, EGH, emphasized the power of collaboration in building stronger enterprises. He noted that when government institutions, private sector players, and partners move forward together with shared purpose, MSMEs thrive. He underscored the importance of capacity building, citing mentorship, technical training, and sector-specific skilling as key components in empowering businesses to grow and remain competitive. The Governor also highlighted formalization as a crucial enabler, explaining that registered enterprises are better positioned to access credit, explore new market opportunities, and benefit from various government programs designed to support business expansion.

The Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and MSME Development Hon. Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya, who graced the forum as Chief Guest, shared the national government’s priorities in accelerating MSME growth. He outlined key reforms such as the Start-Up Bill currently in Parliament, which aims to provide a structured pathway for enterprises to transition from micro to large companies. He reaffirmed the government’s strong support for formalization and detailed interventions in financing, market access, digital transformation, and the green economy. Among the highlighted financing options were the Hustler Fund, Kenya Industrial Estates financing of up to KES 20 million, and Kenya Development Corporation facilities offering up to KES 100 million for enterprises with high growth potential.

Representing the Micro and Small Enterprises Authority (MSEA), Dr. Caroline Kaua, speaking on behalf of CEO Mr. Henry Rithaa, reiterated the Authority’s commitment to fostering a strong and sustainable MSME ecosystem. She emphasized that MSEA continues to strengthen enterprise development through formalization, capacity building, and targeted support programs. Dr. Kaua highlighted flagship initiatives such as KJET and NYOTA, which focus on equipping entrepreneurs with the skills and structures required to build resilient businesses. She encouraged MSMEs at the forum to visit the MSEA booth for guidance and registration, noting that formalization remains a critical gateway for enterprises seeking access to credit, new markets, and government-led development interventions.

The event also brought together key institutions including Kenya Industrial Estates, Uwezo Fund, Hustler Fund, Safaricom, Kenya Revenue Authority, Stanbic Bank, and other partners who participated in insightful panel discussions. The conversations explored innovative financing models for MSMEs, the adoption of digital tools to enhance operational efficiency, improved market linkages, and the importance of integrating green and climate-resilient practices into enterprise development. These discussions reinforced the need for coordinated, multi-sectoral collaboration to unlock opportunities and address challenges facing MSMEs.
As the forum drew to a close, there was a renewed sense of commitment among both public and private sector stakeholders to continue working together to create an enabling environment where MSMEs can grow, compete, and scale. The 4th edition of the MSMEs Connect Forum demonstrated the power of partnership and shared vision, reaffirming Kisumu County’s role as a hub of innovation and enterprise activity and underscoring the significant role MSMEs play in driving Kenya’s economic transformation.
