NYOTA BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT SKILLS TRAINING EMPOWERS YOUTH IN KAKAMEGA COUNTY

The NYOTA Business Development Skills (BDS) Training took place across all constituencies in Kakamega County from 30th October to 2nd November 2025, equipping young entrepreneurs with vital business management and financial literacy skills

The Presidential Economic Transformation Secretariat Advisor for Trade and MSMEs, Mr. Charles Kemboi, accompanied by MSEA NYOTA Deputy Project Coordinator, Evelyne Chemutai, MSEA NYOTA Officer and a trainer at the Sigalagala National Polytechnic and Lugari KMTC Campus

Mr. Kemboi commended the youth for their active participation, emphasizing that “the problem is not how much you start with, but the idea you have and the problem you are trying to solve.” He encouraged them to expand their businesses, collaborate with peers, and engage fully with trainers. He further urged them to make good use of the upcoming grant to grow their enterprises, create employment, and contribute meaningfully to building the economy.

During the interactive sessions, beneficiaries shared their questions and recommendations on the project and its implementation. Mr. Kemboi lauded their engagement and reaffirmed that the NYOTA Project is designed to equip youth with practical financial literacy and business management skills while promoting a strong saving culture. He also advised participants to identify clear business ideas and potential locations in preparation for the grant disbursement phase.

Across all the training venues, participants were taken through to key entrepreneurship concepts including financial literacy, bookkeeping, savings, and the effective use of mobile money tools to support their business operations. They also explored business management, covering topics such as business planning, market and customer discovery, product positioning, and developing a unique selling proposition. Group activities such as SWOT analysis discussions helped participants assess their business strengths and opportunities while identifying areas for improvement.

The sessions concluded on a high note, with beneficiaries expressing appreciation to the trainers and the government for their continued support through the NYOTA Project and showing eagerness to apply their new insights to grow and strengthen their businesses.
