World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5th, saw dynamic participation from the Micro and Small Enterprises Authority teams across Marsabit, Mandera, and Embu Counties, highlighting their commitment to sustainable environmental conservation practices. Here’s an overview of the activities and celebrations that took place.
In Marsabit County, the MSEA Marsabit office led a tree planting exercise at the Moyale One Stop Border Post in Moyale Sub-County. This initiative was led by the Deputy County Commissioner of Moyale Sub-County and saw active participation from various stakeholders, including the Administration, Kenya Revenue Authority, Kenya Forest Service, Kenya Wildlife Service, Marsabit County officials, Moyale Sub-County Climate Change Committees, leaders from Micro and Small Enterprises (MSE) Associations, youth leaders, women’s groups, initiatives for people with disabilities, and several non-governmental partners.
Over 1,000 trees were planted on both the Kenyan and Ethiopian sides of the border. This effort is in alignment with the presidential directive to plant 15 billion trees by 2032, contributing significantly to the national afforestation goals. The collaborative spirit and extensive participation underscore the community’s commitment to combating climate change and fostering a greener environment in the otherwise arid northern Kenya.

In Embu County, the MSEA regional office celebrated World Environment Day by connecting Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) with customers through an exhibition showcasing innovative, climate-friendly products and services. The event, organized by the county, featured remarkable products such as fuel (diesel, petrol) and tiles made from recycled plastic waste by local entrepreneurs, highlighting the potential of MSMEs to drive environmental sustainability through innovation.
The exhibition was graced by the presence of the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, Hon. Soipan Tuya, and Embu County Governor, H.E. Hon. Cecily Mbarire. The event also honored environmental champions, including Alice Wanjiru, a young girl named the Climate Action Ambassador 2024 for her commendable effort in planting over 5,000 trees. These recognitions aim to inspire more individuals to engage in climate action and environmental conservation.
