TECHNICAL WORKSHOP ON OPERALIZATION OF OLKALOU COLD STORAGE FACILITY IN NYANDARUA COUNTY

MSEA team lead by Director of Infrastructure and Innovation Eng. Edward Karani and Chief legal officer Mary Chege in collaboration with Nyandarua County held a 3 day technical committee workshop on the operalization of the Nyandarua County Olkalau cold storage. The workshop was officially opened by County Executive Committee Member (CEC) Tourism, Trade and Industrialization Agnes Njunji and CEC Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Francis Miringu. Other officials present include Nyandarua County Attorney Joseph Gatore, Chief Officer Cooperatives Development David Njoroge, Chief Officer Tourism, Trade, industrialisation Samuel Gitaka, Director Cooperatives Philip Kingori, Deputy Director Agribusiness Joseph Mutuma among others.

The  objectives of the workshop was to create an implementation concept that guides the operational model, development of a sustainability model, commercialisation of the cold storage, diversification  of products and inclusivity of all gender groups.

CEC Trade Tourism, Trade and Industrialization Ms Agnes Njunji highlighted the opportunities provided by the cold storage in mitigating potatoes post-harvest losses experienced during high productivity seasons. The CEC Agriculture Livestock Fisheries emphasised the need to diversify the products and expand the scope from the initial potatoes to other products like peas, carrots and vegetables for economic benefit and the long term sustainability of the cold storage.

The workshop was informed by several factors regarding mapping of the stakeholders to operationalize the cold storage, development of budgets and costs, business plans, stakeholder engagement and resource mobilisation among others
