Local Juakali associations in Eldoret and Kakamega begin delivering doors and windows for the Affordable Housing Projects

The Affordable Housing Program (AHP) is a key government initiative aimed at providing decent and affordable housing to low and middle-income households, targeting the delivery of an additional 200,000 units annually in line with the national development blueprint, Vision 2030. As part of this initiative, Jua Kali associations registered with the Micro and Small Enterprises Authority (MSEA) have been allocated preferential contracts for the supply of doors, windows, and other designated items for all affordable housing projects.

The Olendu Elders Jua Kali Association, based in Olenguse CIDC, is one of several associations in Uasin Gishu that have successfully secured opportunities under the AHP. They have supplied door frames and window panels to the Kidiwa Affordable Housing project in Soy Sub-county. Similarly, the Eldoret North Jua Kali Association has successfully delivered windows and doors for the same project. The artisans expressed their gratitude to MSEA and the government for this transformative opportunity, which ensures that MSMEs, including suppliers of industrial building materials, doors, and windows, benefit from subcontracting opportunities for housing projects.

Additional associations will also benefit from additional tenders and business opportunities in the newly initiated Pioneer and Kapseret Affordable Housing projects. Doreen Nandwa, MSEA’s Enterprise Development Officer, joined the association during the delivery, emphasizing the significant impact of such collaborations.

Earlier this week, Nandi County Jua Kali associations received approval for their window and door samples from the housing architect, allowing them to commence production. This approval is a vital step in ensuring that local artisans play an integral role in the project’s success in the county.

Moreover, the MSEA Kakamega team has sensitized and organized the Kakamega Jua Kali artisans to participate in the Affordable Housing Project. The team, currently at 55% production progress, is actively involved in supplying windows, frames, doors, and grills, showcasing their commitment and readiness while expanding employment opportunities for association members.

In preparation for these projects, Jua Kali artisans specializing in welding, carpentry, plumbing, electrical wiring, steel doors, and window fabrication have been identified to undertake various jobs. MSEA field officers, in collaboration with Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, have conducted skills assessments to identify gaps for further retraining and reskilling within the project vicinity.

Additionally, MSEA is actively engaging these artisans in capacity-building forums to equip them with essential knowledge, including financial literacy, marketing skills, and product development. In partnership with the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) and the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), MSEA field officers have trained Jua Kali sector players on issues such as enterprise formalization, product certification, quality assurance, and insurance policies.

These initiatives are not only creating job opportunities for local artisans but also ensuring that the quality and standards of the materials used in the affordable housing projects meet the required benchmarks. By empowering MSMEs and Jua Kali artisans, MSEA is driving economic growth and contributing to the success of Kenya’s Affordable Housing Program.
