CAPACITY BUILDING FOR FARMER MSE ASSOCIATIONS ON THE POTATO VALUE CHAIN AND UPTAKE OF THE OLKALOU COLD STORAGE FACILITY

In a concerted effort to operationalize the Ol-kalou Potato Cold Storage facility in Nyandarua County, the Micro and Small Enterprises Authority (MSEA), led by Madam Caroline Kioko, the Ag. Director of Business Development, Marketing, and Trade, initiated a 3-day sensitization forum to empower farmer MSEs on the utilization of the Ol-kalou Potato Cold Storage Facility.

During the forum, four associations, namely Kaibaga Machinery Ring Association, Kimwe Association, Ngawa poa Jiinua Association, and Kihara Potato Growers Association, were sensitized. MSE Farmers candidly shared their challenges in potato farming, citing capital constraints, difficulty accessing certified seedlings, and limited knowledge of required inputs.

Assuring the farmers of support, the MSEA team committed to addressing these challenges through capacity building, facilitating access to funding opportunities, and collaborating with the Ministry of Agriculture to tackle the issue of certified seed propagation. Emphasizing the benefits of the cold storage facility, farmers were encouraged to explore its potential for value addition and market opportunities.

Furthermore, the team highlighted the upcoming National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement Project (NYOTA), offering grants to youth, and urged farmers to leverage their cooperative unions for investment opportunities and favorable loans. Underscoring MSEA’s role in promoting and regulating MSEs, the team emphasized the importance of value addition and association registration with MSEA for easier access to government opportunities.

With the cold storage facility aiming to reduce post-harvest losses and provide storage solutions until market prices are favorable, MSE farmers were encouraged to invest, save, and maintain records to maximize benefits from upcoming projects like the Kenya Jobs and Economic Transformation Project (KJET).

Exciting times lie ahead for potato farmers in Nyandarua as they embrace these opportunities for growth and prosperity with the operationalization of the Ol-kalou Potato Cold Storage Facility.
